  • Dr. Abhijeet L. Wahegaonkar is a Fellowship trained Orthopedic Upper Extremity, Hand & Microvascular Reconstructive Surgeon with more than 18 years of exclusive experience in the comprehensive management of upper extremity problems, with a strong emphasis on academics and research.
  • After completing his residency in Orthopedic Surgery, he has received training in Hand Surgery, Microvascular Surgery, and Brachial Plexus & Peripheral Nerve Surgery in various prestigious institutes in the USA, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland including the world famous Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand & Micro Surgery for a period of 16 months and as a Research Fellow at the Mayo Clinic in the USA for a period of 2 years. Dr. Wahegaonkar has earned a Master’s Degree in Clinical & Translational Sciences from the Mayo Clinic
  • His special interests include adult & obstetrical brachial plexus surgery, microvascular reconstructive surgery, treatment of congenital hand deformities small joint arthroscopic surgery of the upper extremity & wrist surgery.
  • Dr. Wahegaonkar has received several awards during his career as an academic hand surgeon. Selected recent awards are: 1) “The Robert Acland International Traveling Fellowship of the Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand”; 2) “Young Investigator Award” of the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation of the United States ($100,000) for his research on nerve allografts in brachial plexus surgery; 3) “The D.P. Baksi Gold Medal” at the Indian Orthopaedic Association Annual Conference in 2011 for Best Paper in Elbow surgery; 4) The Carl-Zeiss Travelling Fellowship. 5) He is also listed in the Marquis “Who’s Who in the World” since 2009. 6) He has been appointed as a “Visiting Professor” in Wrist Arthroscopy and Surgery to Taiwan and France since 2009.
  • He was nominated “Professor in Hand Surgery (Adjunct Title) and Honorary Distinguished Clinical Tutor in Orthopaedic Surgery by the Apollo Hospitals Education and Research Foundation.
  • Dr. Wahegaonkar is a member of several International & National Orthopedic and Hand Societies. He was elected as a member of the prestigious American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), the French Society of Hand Surgery (Société Française de Chirurgie de la Main); SICOT, AO Trauma, The European Wrist Arthroscopy Society, Brachial Plexus Society of India, Indian Society of Surgery of the Hand, , Kleinert Hand Society, Tubiana Hand Club, and amongst others, he was recently appointed as Member of the International Relations Committee for a tenure of 3 years; and has previously served as a Member of the Diversity Committee of the American Society of Surgery of the Hand.  He is also a Member of the Mayo Alumni Society. He is a founder member and Executive Council Member of the Asia- Pacific Wrist Association and Chairman of the IT committee.
  • Dr. Wahegaonkar was elected Founder President of the Wrist Society, India, and has served as the Hon. Secretary of the Pune Orthopaedic Society and as Executive Board Member of the Indian Arthroscopy Society. He is elected as Vice President of the Maharashtra Orthopaedic Association
  • Dr. Wahegaonkar maintains an enthusiastic interest in clinical medicine, research, and education. He has trained several fellows, residents and medical students in the art and science of hand surgery. Dr. Wahegaonkar serves as:

  • He is faculty to various Institutes, Teaching courses, Conferences & Seminars. He has been an invited guest speaker at numerous international and national hand surgery conferences. He is a pioneer of wrist arthroscopy in India.
  • While active in research and clinical practice, he is dedicated to many social & charitable activities. He has a keen interest in physician leadership, improving healthcare delivery and evidence based medicine. Outside of clinical practice, he enjoys biking, trekking & hiking, basketball, music, medical illustration & photography and traveling with his family.
